What does AVS (address verification system) mean?

AVS is a non-card present event meaning 'Address Verification System'.

For keyed transactions, there is a benefit to sending it, as the hotel/innkeeper gets better rates for confirming the billing address of the card holder when sending a manually keyed transaction.

However, because hotels are a 'lodging type' of merchant, it is not necessary to send along AVS with a credit card authorization.

For card present transactions (ie, 'swiped' authorizations) AVS is ignored.
