When BookingCenter Desktop gives the message "The ODB Connection could not be made." at start-up, it is usually due to the network being down or the ODB server has stopped running on the server.

If the network is down: Check to see if you can use the Network Neighborhood (Windows) or Connect to Server (Mac) to pull up the server (where the BookingCenter database is stored) and view it from the client. If you can not 'see' your server, ask your network administrator to help you get the network running again. BookingCenter Support can not help you with the situation until your network is functioning.

If the network is up (i.e. you can 'see' your server), here is what you do:

Open the ODB Admin Tool (in Program Files on the server under Windows and in the Applications folder for Mac OS X ).

Make sure you set the correct IP address in ODB ADMIN Tool. Do this by choosing ODB Administrative Preferences and the Options menu.

Cick the button Read IP and it will read the server’s IP address and set it for you.

After setting the IP address correctly on the server, place the cursor in the Actions menu, at top right of the screen, and choose Commit Changes and Restart ODB.

Close the ODB Manager Preferences window. You are now viewing the Omnis Databridge Administration window. Click Stop, and wait until message says "ODB Server is stopped'.

Click Start and verify that the ODB Server says "ODB Server is Running".

Try again to connect to the server from BookingCenter. The error message has hopefully gone away.

How do I Network BookingCenter on Multiple Machines ?

Networking BookingCenter on Multiple Machines (for Version 6 and later)

BookingCenter works in a networked architecture so that there can be 'clients' and a 'server'. This allows for multiple people to work BookingCenter concurrently and for the server to utilize the network efficiently to process credit cards and communicate with the Central Reservation Server. Only ONE PC can connect to the BookingCenter Service to poll rates and availability - this computer is called the 'Network Manager'. This one PC becomes the Management Computer that will be synchronizing rate, inventory, and content with the BookingCenter Central Reservation Service.

If you are running any Windows network OR Macintosh OSX from 10.5 OR later (OS names of Tiger or Leopard) OR Mac OS7, 8, or 9 then networking is fast and easy. Instructions for simple networking are found at: http://www.BookingCenter.com/help/network_bc.html.

If you are running OS X 10.1 through 10.4 for Mac OS, then it is REQUIRED to use a networking technique called ODB (Omnis DataBridge). Because earlier versions of Mac OS X need assistance with networking, if you are using these versions of OS X then your networking needs are explained at: http://www.BookingCenter.com/help/network_odb.html.

Windows or Macintosh OSX users from 10.5 or later (OS names of Tiger or Leopard) can OPTIONALLY choose to use ODB or not. The decision will rest on the confidence and integrity of your Client <--> Server network. If your network is using wired Ethernet (as opposed to wireless); the PCs all have good network cards; the Server is a good PC with good hard drives, then the Windows OS will provide a stable read/write support for the file server and no ODB is required. Instructions for networking Windows PCs without ODB are found at: http://www.BookingCenter.com/help/network_bc.html.

If you choose to install ODB, we recommend working with a network administrator to establish your network, as sharing and assigning IP addresses on a network requires more skill than many hospitality people possess. If any of the above conditions are NOT present on your Windows network (such as PCs connecting to each other via wireless), then BookingCenter highly recommends installing the ODB for Windows on the Server. However, BookingCenter will not setup your ODB network for you. This work must be done by a qualified network administrator. Even if you have a current Support Contract, it is outside the expertise of BookingCenter Support staff to configure an ODB network unless an on-site training and installation contract is purchased. Don't worry, though! We have provided clear and complete instructions and an average user with PC networking skills should be able to accomplish the ODB setup in about 30 minutes. Instructions for networking your Windows Desktop using ODB clients are at: http://www.BookingCenter.com/help/network_odb.html.

The ODB Instructions are attached to this KnowledgeBase article and can be downloaded by clicking below. The file is a .PDF type called 'ODB.pdf".

Learn more details about Networking BookingCenter Software for Macintosh and PC networks by visiting: http://www.bookingcenter.com/help/network_bc.html

Troubleshooting tips for update...

How can I trouble shoot problems with Updating to the Internet?

We have an article explaining the types of Updates the Desktop PMS offers at: https://support.bookingcenter.com/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/55

Troubleshooting tips for update erros are as follows:

If you are experiencing problems with Updating to the Internet, or other BookingCenter services, here are some likely causes:

--> Problem: "Error #0: Sockets: No Data Record" or "Unable to upload...." some file.

Solution: You are using a firewall that prevents BookingCenter from communicating with the Central Reservations Systems. We have seen this happen with the Personal Norton Firewall and some other software firewall products on the internet. Simply turn OFF the firewall, quit BookingCenter, re-start BookingCenter, and try again. If the problem is gone, then you must slowly 'tighten' security restrictions until both your firewall needs and the ability to communicate with BookingCenter's Central Reservation System are met.

--> Problem: Error: Sockets: Time Out

Solution: You are not connected to the Internet or have expired the internet connection. This happens if yuor internet connection dropped out (in the case of a DSL or cable modem, for example) or you are using a dial-up and the connection re-set itself. Simply quit BookingCenter. Connect to the Internet and confirm it by visiting a website or making a search engine query, and then re-launch BookingCenter and try again.

--> Problem: Notifications of Updates (Part or Full) are not getting through to your FROM BookingCenter. You get the 'Network Results Screen Success' but nothing changes online from the update.

Solution: You are not able to notify the BookingCenter server (admin.bookingCenter.com) by either HTTP nor SMTP that your Desktop software just did an Update. This leaves all the updates 'unprocessed' on our servers and the changes you sent not used. We see this in particular instances where there are proxy servers used on the LAN or on satellite systems that have been optimized for HTTP traffic and employ strange 'tunneling' programs for network enhancements.

We also see this if your mail server rejects emailing from within BookingCenterr. Placing the correct SMTP user name and password and choosing "Use SMTP Auth" will work for an Internet Service provider who uses 'clear text' as the authentication schemes. We have an article on Using Authentication to Send Email here:https://support.bookingcenter.com/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/174 to see if your ISP is on this list.

If the 'clear text' authentication scheme that BookingCenter supports does not work with your ISP, then you can download a local SMTP server for your BookingCenter needs. There are numerous FREE SMTP servers for both Macintosh and Windows. Check: http://www.download.com/ and download a free one to use on the BookingCenter PC/Mac you are are having trouble sending emails from. Note, BookingCenter does not support help setting up or configuring an SMTP server, so please contact your local computer networking person if this option is your desire.

The last option is for BookingCenter customers that can not get SMTP access through network authentication or SMTP 'clear text' authentication, nor do they wish to run their own SMTP server. In this case, we can set them up with an account on our BookingCenter servers and they use our SMTP servers for emails sent using the BookingCenter Property Management System. There is a $120/year fee for using the BookingCenter SMTP servers, so try all other alternatives before resorting to this.

--> Problem: Firewall or Anti Virus Errors Prevent Updates or Credit Card Transactions

Solution: You are using a firewall that prevents BookingCenter from communicating with the Central Reservations Systems. While we don't work with firewalls and establishing security protection for our customers, we have found that a decent network administrator can help enable these services while still providing a good protection against intruders. here are the common protocols we require to work for various services:
Service

Host Name

Protocol
Credit Card Processing auth.bookingcenter.com HTTP
Part and Full Updates to the CRS admin.bookingcenter.com FTP
Live Sync admin.bookingcenter.com HTTP
Automated backup of datafile (can be backup.bookingcenter.com or customer's web host) FTP
Networking BookingCenter Desktop clients client dependent on mapping AppleTalk (older Apple Mac networking) or Windows Networking/SAMBA for Windows and mixed networks
MyPMS connectivity mypms.bookingcenter.com HTTP

After adding the above exceptions if you are still receiving timeouts when trying to do an availability update, a credit card transaction or a live sync please follow the test metric below:

1) make a booking, watch the live sync crs update time out
2) Open your firewall/av software and check exceptions
3) Disable all firewall/av software
4) Do an availability update or transfer a booking to a different room or any other modification that causes a CRS upload
5) Verify above update/transfer/live sync performed at normal speed with no issues
6) Re-enable Firewall/AV Software
7 Repeat test illustrated in step 5
8) Verify timeouts/issues reoccur.

The test metric above should conclusively rule out or confirm the issue is in fact within the firewall or av software. BookingCenter cannot provide technical support for firewalls or av software. Please contact a local networking professional for further assistance.

Make a copy (backup) of it.

-> Quit BookingCenter on the old computer.

-> Drag the datafile to a folder on the old computer to the new computer or else onto a portable drive such as a thumb drive, ZIP, or extrenal drive.

-> Load BookingCenter onto the new computer (follow instructions at: https://support.bookingcenter.com/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/203/). Launch BookingCenter on the new computer.

-> If BookingCenter asks you to load a datafile, choose the one you copied/loaded from the old computer.

Look at the Rooms, Guests, etc. Did it all come across? I bet it did!

Make this new datafile the new one that loads every time on the new computer. How to do this?

-> Go to the FILE menu of BookingCenter
-> Choose Change Datafile
-> Click 'Other'
-> Find your customized datafile and double-click it. Now you have the correct datafile loaded and ready to use!
-> Now, go back to the FILE menu
-> Choose Change Datafile
-> Highlight the custom datafile you want to launch as the default (ie, each time BookingCenter launches)
-> Click the 'Default' button and BookingCenter will ask if you want to set this datafile as the default. Click "Yes" and it is done.
-> Close the Change Datafile window by clicking the close button

To Stop the DEMO datafile from EVER loading
(this is the one that will be installed in the new BookingCenter folder if you install from a CD-ROM or from the download in the Support Area)

Go into the / BookingCenter / folder on your computer. Find a file called "BCDEMO.df1" and DELETE this file. Now your customized Default datafile will load each time you launch BookingCenter.

or connecting workstations seem to be mutually exclusive (A can only connect when B is not connected or vice versa) then you may have a duplicate serial number on one of the machines.

BookingCenter is very specific about serial #s, and often users are simply using the SAME serial number in more than one computer, which will provide the warning “Too many workstations in use..” at times or error code 100, 101 or 102 when using ODB).

To find out which serial numbers are being used on each computer - and which one is duplicated - open BookingCenter and go to Parameters | Company Info | Register and there you can view the serial number installed or click 'serialize' and change one of them.

Connecting to my network over the internet (away from the property)

Unless you are connected to the actual property network (ie, you can 'see' the front desk PC via 'network neighborhood' or via Apple's 'Connect to Server'), you won't be able to connect to your BookingCenter datafile directly.

If you are using the BookingCenter Booking Engine or Central Reservation Service, then many features are available via the Members Area ( http://members.bookingcenter.com/) for remote use. However, this is not a true 'pms', as it is intended for basic booking and marketing management only. The best way to access a Property Management System remotely is it use MyPMS, our web-based solution. Any Desktop user can upgrade to MyPMS and all data migrates over seamlessly with access 24 x 7 from any internet device. Get details on MyPMS at: http://www.bookingcenter.com/products/mypms.html or call us at +1-707-874-3922 ext 201 to upgrade now.

To literally connect remotely to your Desktop PC or Mac, take a look at LogMeIN (http://www.logmein.com/), PCAnywhere ( http://www.symantec.com/norton/symantec-pcanywhere) , or Apple's Remote Desktop (http://www.apple.com/remotedesktop/) - all of these products allow you to connect to your network, while away at a different location, via the internet. These can be tested for free, and if the speed is adequate for your needs, are quite a decent solution for remote connection to your 'Front Desk' while away.

Locked out after I change the Lock Code from one of my networked Mac or PCs

When a Desktop user purchases two user licenses, they receive 2 Serial Numbers. These numbers are to be entered onto each PC/Mac the Desktop is running, only one per. We have had a situation where a user also has two different Lock Codes (even a 1 character subtle difference) written on an old order form, and thought they needed to enter each one, a different Lock Code from each PC/Mac - and did so a few times.

A Lock Code is meant for only one BookingCenter datafile and to be entered only one time into a datafile. If you have entered multiple different Lock Codes into your datafile and now are receiving a Lock when trying to connect my multiple PCs/Macs, then your datafile is likely corrupt and you will need to fix it. Here is how:

Step 1
Have all users exit BookingCenter except the one copy you will use. Go to the Utilities section (Parameters | Utilities). The name required to access it is ‘precious'.

BEFORE YOU PROGRESS TO REPAIRING YOUR BookingCenter DATAFILE - MAKE A BACKUP and store it somewhere safe!!

Go to Check Datafile choose Re Index and let BookingCenter repair any irregularities.

Once completed, you will be presented with a screen that explains that the datafile was examined successfully. Close this screen, choose "Login" from the FILE menu, and the problem should be fixed.

Enter a Lock Code only one time into your datafile and all will be well.

There are times when your BookingCenter Desktop datafile may need to have Utilities run on it to resolve issues. If this occurs, and a Support representative directs you to run these utilities, then here's how you do it:

Step 1 - how do you connect to BookingCenter's datafile?
• If you run a single computer or a Windows network without using ODB, go to Step 3 below.

Step 2
If you are running a Macintosh OS X or WIndows network using ODB, then it is necessary to have all users exit BookingCenter except the user on the server or closest to it. Then, if you are running ODB on your network, connect directly to your BookingCenter datafile by choosing Parameters | System COnfiguration and un-checking 'Use ODB'. Then, click LOGIN and login directly to your production datafile, avoiding the IDB_Admin.df1 datafile.

You want to connect directly to the datafile and NOT via ODB to perform this operation. If this is not clear to you, then stop now and seek assistance from your network adinstrator who installed ODB.

Step 3
Have all users exit BookingCenter except the one copy you will use. Go to the Utilities section (Parameters | Utilities). The name required to access it is ‘precious'.

BEFORE YOU PROGRESS TO REPAIRING YOUR BookingCenter DATAFILE - MAKE A BACKUP and store it somewhere safe!!

Go to Check Datafile choose Full Check and let BookingCenter repair any irregularities. Then, click the button called Re-Index and wait until it is done.

Once completed, you will be presented with a screen that explains that the datafile was examined successfully. Close this screen, choose "Login" from the FILE menu, and any problems should be fixed.

Lock Icon Locks Me Out When Connecting From a Networked Mac / PC

There are many reasons why one Mac or PC will loose connection to your server where the 'datafile' is stored. Usually it has to do with a problematic network cable, network card, or faulty wireless network.

Many times, only ONE of your Mac or PCs will get the 'Lock' and there is no way to 'un-freeze' this except by force quitting (control/apple/esc for Mac and control/alt/delete on Windows) the BookingCenter Desktop and starting it up again.

When this continually happens to ONE Mac or Windows, that helps identify the problem and until you fix it, the networking errors are prone to continue to happen. BookingCenter is VERY sensitive to the persistence of a 'byte compatible' connection to the server, whereas websites and email are very fault-tolerant. This means that even a mild issues with a network cable, network card, or faulty wireless connection will manifest in a 'Lock' on BookingCenter but show no problems for other internet use. It can be very frustrating, and hard to deduce.

The advice we give is to situations where the 'lock' continually happens to ONE Mac or Windows is - in no particular order - to:

• wire that Mac/PC directly to the router/hub that connects to the server. Basically, getting rid of a wireless issue.

• replace the ethernet cable (if it's wired already).

• replace the wireless card or ethernet card that connects that Mac/PC to the network

• plug the Mac/PC into a different port on the router/hub that connects to the server in the hope that you have a faulty port.

If the 'lock' occurrence is happening on ALL of your networked Mac PCs (often or occasionally), then you have a larger issue and the problem could be on the server, the router/hub, or other devices making to much traffic in your network. When this occurs, you will need to either considering moving to our web-based MyPMS system or calling in a network administrator who can solve your network problems. This is beyond the ability of Tech Support to solve for you remotely.

For general networking tips and instructions with all variations of Mac and Windows PCs, read here.

How do I disable write-behind caching to help prevent data corruption?

If you are receiving duplicate bookings or corrupted records when working on a Peer to Peer LAN (Local Area Network), then your network may need the following settings to disable 'write behind cache' on the Windows machines on your network.

Disabling write-behind caching

Turning off Write-behind caching is one of the two most important things that you can do to help ensure that your files will not become scrambled by the operating system.

This is especially important when running programs which allow more than one user to access the same disk file data simultaneously or which access a record more than once within a relatively short time period. Word processing programs and spreadsheets generally cannot access a file any faster than the operator can type in relatively long commands directing them to do so. However, database programs, even when used by only one operator on a single workstation, frequently allow several different parts of the program to access the same file, or make repeated accesses to the same file within a very short time.

With "Write-behind Caching" enabled, it would be possible for the Workstation A to get different Guest, Booking or Availability information from Workstation B, resulting in a duplicate booking or corrupted guest record.

Disk Caching programs which are allowed to "hold" data records cannot always recognize that another program, or even another part of the same program needs the updated version of the data. Also, during the time a Disk Caching program is "holding" an updated data record, any momentary power interruption or any error in the system or any application which causes a temporary interruption in processing can cause the updated data record to be irrecoverably lost without any warning or operator notification.

There have been claims that "Write-behind Caching" feature (Microsoft also calls the feature "Lazy Write") improves perfomance. The perfomance improvement was always very, very small: much too small to be noticeable for business applications. And if you are using modern disk drives which contain their own full-track buffer, there will be NO performance improvement. Virtually all PATA, SATA, and USB drives purchased since 2005 have a built-in full-track (or larger) buffer. In any case the recovery time you will spend the first time you experience data corruption due to "Write-Behind Caching" will wipe out at least 10 years of any performance time "savings."

HOW TO TURN WRITE-BEHIND CACHING OFF IN WINDOWS 95/NT/98/ME/2000:

1. From the DeskTop select the "Start" Button.

2. From the menu that appears, select "Settings".

3. From the second menu that appears, select "Control Panel".

4. In the resulting window, double click on "system". This displays the "System Properties" window.

5. In the "System Properties" window, select the "performance" tab.

6. At the bottom of the Performance tab select "File System".

7. In the resulting "File System Properties" window, the "Hard Disk" tab will be displayed. Ensure that the two items shown on this tab are set as follows:

a. "Typical role of this machine:" should be set to "Desktop computer". If it is not, then left click on the down-pointing arrow and select "Desktop computer".

b. "Read-ahead optimization:" should be set to the "full" or right-most position. If it is not, then left-click on the pointer and, holding the left mouse button down, drag the pointer to the "Full" (right-most) position. Then release the mouse button.

c. If you have changed any of the settings on this tab, then left-click the "Apply" button on the bottom of this window to save the changes.

8. You are still in the "File System Properties" window.

a. Left-click on the "Troubleshooting" tab. Ensure that the "Disable write-behind caching for all drives" box has a check mark in it. If this box already has a check mark in it, then Write-behind caching is already turned off. Select "OK" and then "Close" to exit the properties setup windows. You do not have to complete the remaining directions in this section.

b. If "Disable write-behind caching for all drives" does not have a check mark then, place the pointer (cursor) over the box to the left of the appropriate line and left click the mouse. A check mark will appear in the box. If the check mark does not appear then left click on the box until it does. NOTE: DO NOT CHANGE ANY OTHER SETTINGS ON THIS TAB. DOING SO COULD CAUSE MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH YOUR SYSTEM.

c. Left click on "Apply".

d. Left click on "OK". The "File System Properties" window will disappear.

e. Left click on "OK" again. The "File System Properties" window will disappear.

f. Left click on "OK" again. The "System Properties window will disappear.

g. Windows will display a message stating that you must restart your computer before the new settings will take effect and ask if you want to restart the computer now. Select "Yes" to restart the computer now. Write-behind caching is now turned off. Close the "Control Panel" window by left clicking on the"X" in the upper right-hand corner of the window.

HOW TO TURN WRITE-BEHIND CACHING OFF IN WINDOWS XP:

1. From the DeskTop select the "Start" Button.

2. From the menu that appears, select "Settings".

3. From the second menu that appears, select "Control Panel".

4. In the resulting window, double click on "system".

5. In the resulting window, click on the 'Hardware' tab (at the top of the window), then click on the 'Device Manager' button.

6. Expand the 'Disk Drives' icon, then right-click each drive individually:

7. Select Properties.

8. On the 'Policies' tab, UN-check the box labeled 'Enable write caching on the disk.' This turns this dangerous feature off on the selected drive.

Repeat steps 7-8 for each drive in your system. Windows XP does not prompt you to reboot after completing this change.
HOW TO TURN WRITE-BEHIND CACHING OFF IN WINDOWS 7:

1. From the DeskTop select the "Start" Button.

2. On the menu that appears, right-click "Computer" and select "Properties".

3. In the left pane, click "Device Manager."
4. In the list of devices, expand "Disk Drives," right-click on a disk drive, and click "Properties."
5. Click the "Policies" tab and Un-Check "Enable Write Caching on the device." This turns this dangerous feature off on the selected drive

Repeat steps 4-5 for each drive in your system. Windows 7 does not prompt you to reboot after completing this change.

ALL WINDOWS SYSTEMS:

If ANY drives are found to have 'Write Delay Caching' or 'Write Caching' enabled we strongly recommend that you perform the following after changing this setting:

Close all applications and then Restart your system.
Run ScanDisk (START->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->ScanDisk) and allow ScanDisk to fix any problems found (there usually WILL be problems if Write Caching has been used). On Windows XP or Windows 7, run "CHKDSK /F" from a Command prompt instead of running ScanDisk.
Reboot again. At this point, your file system directories should be 'clean' so that your programs should run properly unless the program files have been corrupted. If you suspect that your program files are corrupt, restore your programs by reinstalling them in accordance with the instructions for your program.
Disabling Opportunistic locking is a good idea to do as well.
Disabling Opportunistic locking

'Opportunistic locking' is another issue that seems to affect networked database usage on Windows LANs, and it is an issue with Win 2000 and XP. Microsoft has a good support article on this: Configuring Opportunistic Locking in Windows 2000 (Q296264) which I would recommend a read of.

If you are having troubles with double-bookings on your LAN after un-setting 'Write-behind cache', we recommend

Client side (BookingCenter client PC):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MRXSmb\Parameters - OplocksDisabled REG_DWORD 0(default) or 1. Set to 1 to disable.

Server side (BookingCenter server PC):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters - EnableOplocks REG_DWORD 0 or 1(default). Set to 0 to disable.
Theoretically, I guess you just need to set the server side as it is the one controlling the distribution of the op locks, but do it for both if required.

When opening your BookingCenter Desktop Software, if you get this message: "Quitting Omnis due to unrecoverable error: Insufficient memory available DMFVAL2.cpp:536 "
It is recomended that you Re-install your Desktop Software.

Please follow the following Helpdesk Article to Reinstall your software.

Go to http://downloads.bookingcenter.com/ and download a new version of BookingCenter, but before you install it, copy your / BookingCenter Images/ and your data file to a place when you can put it BACK into BookingCenter once you've installed the new version. We don't want you to over-write your BookingCenter file when you do the re-installation, so please MAKE A COPY before proceeding.

Also please note. An active support contract is required to download software.

Here's the steps to take:

1) Download the new version of BookingCenter and save it on your computer.

2) Copy your / BookingCenter Images/ and your data file to a place where it is safe. Also, copy any other file you have placed in your / BookingCenter / folder that you need to save.

3) Throw the whole BookingCenter folder (C:/ BookingCenter / on Windows or Applications | BookingCenter on Mac OS X) to the trash

4) Follow through with the file you downloaded and re-install BookingCenter. If on a Windows 7 or Vista PC make sure you right click on the installer and left click on 'Run as Administrator'

5) Copy the your / BookingCenter Images/ and and your data file into the new BookingCenter folder at C:/BookingCenter/ on Windows or Applications | BookingCenter on Mac OS X.

6) Launch BookingCenter. Register it as per your registration details - these were sent to you earlier.

7) Once in BookingCenter, go to the FILE menu
Choose Change Datafile
Click “Other”
Find your customized datafile and double-click it. Now you have the correct datafile loaded and ready to use!
Now, go back to the FILE menu
Choose Change Datafile
Highlight the custom datafile you want to launch as the default (ie, each time BookingCenter launches)
Click the “Default” button and BookingCenter will ask if you want to set this datafile as the default. Click "Yes" and it is done.
Close the Change Datafile window by clicking the close button
